“Caught in the act!” Remus proclaimed, setting his wand alight.
“It’s not what it looks like!” Sirius promised, though the guilty look on his face said otherwise.
James scurried back to his own bed without making eye contact with Remus. “I’ll deal with you later!” Remus yelled.
“Will you all bugger off?” Peter mumbled, half-asleep, from his bed.
“Dearest Peter, my only trustworthy friend,” Remus said, glaring at Sirius. Peter didn’t respond; he had already drifted off to sleep again.
“I wasn’t, whatever you thought, nothing happened.” Sirius gave Remus his best puppy-dog eyes.
“So you weren’t digging through my trunk to try and uncover your Christmas presents?”
Sirius bit his lip. “Well no, not exactly.” Remus crossed his arms. “Maybe a little, but—“
“Could you two please take this elsewhere? Some of us blokes need our beauty sleep,” James yelled from the darkness of his bed.
Remus looked indignant, but Sirius grabbed his arm to lead him down to the common room. “It’s not his fault really, let’s go.”
“Alright, fine,” Sirius said once they were sitting in front of the fire. “Yes, I was snooping for my Christmas present. James was only helping because I’m absolutely hopeless at knowing where to look. Now, don't look like that. I wasn’t trying to ruin the surprise, but…”
“Well?” Remus prompted, still angry. He may have been treating Sirius worse for it because he had really been hoping to get a full night’s sleep.
“I was trying to figure out what to get you,” Sirius mumbled.
“That makes absolutely no sense,” Remus insisted.
“Yes it does! Imagine if I’d got you some old book you already had and you got me something like a new Quidditch broom!”
“You know I can’t afford anything like that.”
“Yes, but you see the point.”
Remus paused, his resolve breaking. He’d felt the same way when he was buying Sirius’s gift. “You could have just asked,” he retorted, but the anger was gone from his voice.
“You caught us before we found anything. I’m sorry.” Sirius stood up as if to walk back upstairs.
“Padfoot?” Remus began, standing to face his friend. “Why does it matter so much?”
Sirius shrugged. “I reckon I was trying to impress you.” A smile lit up his face. “I forgot that my stunning good looks do that enough already.”
Remus took a couple of strides to stand right in front of Sirius. “Right. About that.”
Sirius’s eyes widened. “Moony?”
“I have another question for you.”
Sirius swallowed, but showed no other sign of intimidation. “Alright.”
“Why is it that you come to wake me up every morning in person but then just yell at James and Peter to get out of bed?” Sirius opened his mouth as if to respond, but Remus continued. “And why is it that you’ve started sitting with me in class instead of James? And finally, why are you agonizing over my Christmas gift when I know you bought James’s gift two weeks ago?”
“That was more than one question,” Sirius pointed out, a small pout on his face.
“Yes, but I’m thinking there’s just one answer.”
Sirius looked so put out at that point that Remus decided to go ahead and kiss him. Sirius immediately responded to the kiss, wrapping his arms around Remus’s waist.
“If this is some clever ploy to get a better Christmas present,…” Sirius threatened. He kissed Remus quickly and gently. “Then it’s working.” He cocked his head to the side, an action which always preceded a question. “Why didn’t you say something sooner?”
Remus shrugged. “I wasn’t sure yet where you stood. Truth be told, I still wasn’t sure tonight until you kissed me back.”
“Well I won’t let you doubt it again,” Sirius swore, pulling Remus into another embrace.
As they headed back upstairs, Sirius asked, “What do you think about sleeping in my bed tonight?”
“I think our mates would have a heart attack,” Remus retorted.
Sirius’s smile was wicked. “Exactly.”
